Mother's gum disease linked to infant's death

Pregnant women with untreated gum disease may have more at stake than just their teeth. They may also be risking the lives of their babies, a new study shows.

Expectant mothers have long been warned that gum disease can cause a baby to be born prematurely or too small. But for the first time scientists have linked bacteria from a mother’s gums to an infection in a baby that was full-term but stillborn, according to the study which was published Thursday in Obstetrics and Gynecology... Wow! I can't believe some of the comments that people have posted on newsvine...some of these comments are completely off the topic of what the article was all about. I feel for this woman who lost her baby and I commend her for reaching out and trying to find all she could about why and how her baby died.

I am an educated woman, someone who has taken care of her teeth all her life...and then I got pregnant at the age of 30. I had never had problems with my teeth until I was carrying my son. People - they say your gums soften when you are pregnant. It is in any and most pregnancy books. It is not all about catching the problem because in my case, I had no problems before!! I talked to my OB/GYN and he said to wait to get the problem taken care of - apparantly I had to wait until my 2nd trimester so that there could be less harm to the baby. When I was 24 - 25 weeks, I went into a peridontist with note from said ob/gyn stating that I could have deep cleanings dones, that antibiotics were safe for me to put on, etc. I went to the peridontist that my in-laws have been using for years. Unfortunately, the receptionist put me with a different doctor. The procedure was split up between my right side and left. Unfortunately at the end of the procedures, BOTH TIMES, I questioned the peridontist about antibitocs...which if you remember, my doctor gave "permission" for me to have. She said no, I didn't need them. Five days later, I went into preterm labor and gave birth to my son 14 weeks early. He weighed 2 lbs, 2 ozs, and we almost lost him. Now he is almost 2 and has no residual effects from being so premature. For the rest of my life, I will blame myself for what happened. I just thank God that our prayers were answered and this child is the light of my life. I am currently pregnant with our second child and I am doing everything to "avoid" the dentist. Things happen, people.

But seriously, how can some of you people cast your judments on this poor woman...asking if she was brought up on charges. My heart goes out to this woman and my thoughts and prayers will be with her.
