Is Sunday a no-fun day for Halloween?

JEWEL SAMAD / AFP - Getty Images

For some, it’s the fact that it’s happening on a school night. For others, the problem is that it’s a scheduling-conflict with a football game. For many, it’s the fact that it’s occurring on the Christian Sabbath. For a variety of reasons, the fact that Halloween is falling on a Sunday this year is causing a sizable amount of people no small degree of anxiety. What’s a candy-craving trick-or-treater to do?

The New York Times ran a compelling piece on this problem yesterday, highlighting the lengths to which concerned parties are willing to go. It’s a concern that’s motivated people to even suggest moving the traditional observance of the holiday, although a consensus on the issue seems elusive at best.

Parents, do you have a problem with the fact that Halloween’s falling on a Sunday this year? Would you be in favor of re-scheduling the trick-or-treating? How do you think your kids would feel about it? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

For Halloween Obama is dressing up like the President. It's not very believable, but what the heck, it's trick or treat time.

Realy, this is first time halloween fell on a sunday or a school nite? All the generations before never had a problem with it. Either you celebrate it or don't.

No need to change a thing. Would you change christmas to the 3rd sat in Dec because it's convienient? Get a life people!

Really?? It gets dark early enough to go out and who really says that you need to go trick or treating when its dark. Or you don't have to go in the wee hours of the night people!! Takes a good neighborhood to go trick or treating for a good hour!! Apparently, the newer generation has nothing better to do these days then to complain....

I don't think people should get all bent out of shape, because Halloween falls on a Sunday, go to church like normal, and then let the children go trick or treating as usual. I know for a fact our family really gets into Halloween every year for the past 20 years, we have a haunted house in our front yard for the children to come through, get their candy, get scared and have a good time. It's a nice time of the year for everyone, young and old, just enjoy it while you can, regardless what day it falls on.

Honestly, I feel that, if the only beef that my fellow Christians have is that it falls on Sunday, they really aren't living up to the true meaning of being a Christian. Christianity teaches that we should be Christians on every day of the week, not just Sunday. The idea of playing the role only once a week is ridiculous, and a slap in God's face. Christianity is supposed to be WHO you are at your core being, not a name badge that you wear on special occasions, or once a week. Playing Christian once a week relegates it to role playing, and actually relegates it to the level of dressing up for Halloween itself, as a character. "Hi, I'm a Christian. What are you?"

Halloween celebrates death, superstition, and evil spirits, as well as evil practices. It glorifies the myths of evil beings, and tempts people to idolize those things by dressing up as them (not to mention the obvious role Hollywood has been playing in doing so of late). Halloween not only has nothing to do with Christianity, it encourages Christians to do the exact opposite of what they're supposed to do. What they're supposed to do is glorify God in all that they do, think, act, or speak. What they're encouraged to do by practicing Halloween is glorify all that I listed above, and act like the world. If Christians participate in Halloween at all, they're not taking their faith seriously, and grieving God. My family does not celebrate Halloween, and I happen to know several other Christian families who have also chosen to do likewise. If Christians choose to celebrate Halloween, God will forgive them. But it hurts their witness, whether they choose to believe it or not.

The Christian Sabbath day is sundown friday night to sundown Saturday night, The Seventhday. Sunday is not a Sabbathday for anyone, read your bible Deuteronmy Chapter 5 vs 12,13 and 14. The catholic will never change the Christian Sabbath day from Saturday (7Th day) to Sunday (1st day).

In the sixties, we kids on the block quickly ate our dinner, got in our costumes, and whether Halloween came on a school night or not, we ran fast from one house to another to get as many goodies as we could before our 8:00 p.m. curfew. My parents were not religious, however, they were strict about homework being done, instrument being practiced, dinner was cleared from the plate and loaded into the dishwasher, and being home by the curfew, not 5 min. later . The kids and parents were all happy.

Christy--that's BS it's "All Saint's Eve" or "Fall Harvest Day" an old Celtic celebration, celebrated every year on the eve before "All Saint's Day"

Not a problem for me. I don't go to church on Sunday nights, Halloween is a religious celebration for me, and my son does not attend school and I take the day of on November 1st, no matter what, every year.

Samhain, Halloween, All Hallows Eve, whatever you want to call it is October 31st, the night before All Saints Day. The date was chosen because of its roots influenced by Christianity and Paganism. If you dont want to celebrate it on Sunday, don't. Trying to change it because of you want to be a Pagan one day and a Christian the next is kinda hypocritical, because of school is unjustified, (trick or treating is usually over by 7pm, and your kids should have finished their homework already, its a weekend) and for college football is just stupid (Tivo it, your kids are priority). Leave it alone; its everyones holiday, not just yours.

I think I neglected to add a qualifier in my previous comment...my apologies, I didn't get enough sleep last night...

I truly do NOT think that Christians should celebrate Halloween at all; however, what to do about kids who don't want to feel left out:

Our church throws a "Fall-o-ween Jesus" party every Halloween, so as to give the Christian kids a chance to do something fun on Halloween, without glorifying satan and all his evil works.

We have games, a cake walk, candy and prizes for the best costume. One qualifier: no evil or scary costumes allowed. We can have fun without glorifying evil, and still use it to reach out to people.

christy, you seem to be very versed in christianity. how about you verse yourself in the history of halloween. yes it has pagan roots. no it does not glorify/celebrate the devil/evil/evil spirits. it was the celtric celebration of the end of the harvest and beginning of winter. they believed the spirits could come back to earth that day and they'd welcome home their lost loved ones and ward away the evil ones. no one but lunatics run around hold seances. what is wrong with scary costumes? its playing dress up. humans enjoy being frightened its apart of our biological makeup. people getting in a uproar over changing the date and freaking out because they think it celebrates evil and the devil need to do some research on the subject and just dont celebrate it. its ridiculous. children see it as a night TO GET CANDY AND DRESS UP!

Halloween should be the 4th Saturday of October - it would end all confusion and it wouldn't be a school night.

I agree with the last Saturday in October and I have said this for years regardless of what day the 31st is! My vote has less to do with the Christian part (although I am Christian) and more to do with the hassel of dealing with the whole event when it falls on a week night. For me the issue is getting off work at 5 p.m., getting home and feeding the kids some dinner really fast, then dressed up and around the neighborhood trick or treating, back home and ready for bed at a decent time so they can get up and go to school the next morning. Having Halloween on a Saturday would eliminate all that for most people.

Halloween has been on Oct. 31 since the beginning of time. Does everything have to be a problem today. When we were kids I am sure once every 7 or 8 years Halloween fell on a Sunday. What's the big deal? Most traditions in this country have gone away because one or more whinning groups of people had a problem. Let's go back to simpler times when people just went with the flow instead of complaining about everything.

Why is everything a problem or confusing for the parents these days?? I work full-time and get home later than 5 p.m. but I still manage to feed the kids and take them trick or treating whether it's a Monday or a Sunday. Why is everything inconvenient for people?? If you didn't want to have anything to do with Halloween why did you have kids??? You all must have had shiZZy childhoods. Sorry God but you don't come first on Halloween. If going to church is a problem go on Saturday night. Stop complaining about everything. What a selfish world this has become!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you. God comes first. The issue some people have is being too legalistic with Sunday being the ONLY day to give to God. Our "Sabbath Rest" is found when we go to Him, every time. It isn't one specific day. Our church is celebrating it's annual Trunk or Treat this Sunday. No issue...because our "Sabbath Rest" is in HIM, not in a day.

Rescheduling a traditional holiday because of a religion is entirely ridiculous. If Halloween being on a Sunday interferes with your religion then don't participate. You don't have to make a big fuss and ruin it for everyone.

The Sabbath is from sundown friday til sundown saturday, so whats the big deal? If the Sabbath is about "Sabbath Rest", why do people still work on sundays, and do whatever else they want to do on Sunday? That day should be all about God, "the seventh day is the Sabbath, in it thou shall not do any work....".

Halloween has its origins from Celtic traditions that has lasted centuries. It is the 'summer's end' and the beginning of the winter. its the celebration between the 'lighter half' of the year and the start of the 'darker half'. they believed the wall between the 'otherworld' was thinner during this day/celebration, and good and bad spirits alike could return. they'd welcome the loved family members and ward off the old spirits. it has always been celebrated on october 31st. its when the tradition takes place. i'm a roman catholic born and raised 12 years of catholic school. all saints day was a response to the pagan holiday of halloween. bottom line, you cant change the date. its an evening of fun for your children to dress up in costumes, which is always fun to children. they're not running around naked under the pale moonlight. if you want to change the date of halloween, why not change the date of valentines day? st. patricks day? oh thats right, its because those are the feast days that have always been just like halloween.

It's written right there in the Bible and the Torah but people will do what they want to do. They will believe what they want to believe. And as human nature has proven, we believe in God and "follow His rules".... until it becomes an inconvenience us. Then in that case Satan gives us 101 excuses why what we are doing is not as bad as it seems. That is what free will is.

My best advice: If you feel ANY drop of guilt and see any conflict with completing an action and it conflicts with your morality… then maybe that little inner voice is telling you that that thing you are doing is really not for the best or even wrong. If you find yourself making compromises and excuses for that action then maybe that little devil on your shoulder is trying to convince you that it’s alright. Just think: Could you ever imagine a problem with celebrating Christmas, New Year’s or even the 4th of July on a Sunday…? Even if you stretched your imagination if Thanksgiving was on a fixed date… would you feel a “conflict of interest” if it fell on a Sunday as well? The truth stares us in our in our face. The question is do we really want or even like what we see?

Why don't you get your facts right. The Halloween celebrates the Devil idea was spread around by a bunch of ignorant christians. It origanated from the belief that on the 31st of October spirits could come back to Earth. People dressed up in costumes to ward off evil spirits. People like you need to realize that alot of kids look forward to this and just because its not a christian holiday doesn't mean its not a holiday at all. And just so you don't start talking about how I don't believe in God I'll let you kknow that I do believe in him. Oh and Sunday isn't even the actual Sabbath. The Sabbath occurs on the last day of the week. Sunday is the first.

Halloween is not celebrating the devil. My birthday is on Halloween and has nothing to to do with the devil. My family and I are all Christians who believe in God and we do not worship the devil because we celebrate Halloween by dressing our little ones up and take them trick or treating. Get over it!

Halloween IS a holiday. Whether its for kids or adults or both doesnt matter. Its been a holiday for god knows how long and its stupid for people to have a hissy fit because it lands on sunday on ONE year out of a hundred. Its landed on a sunday many years in the past and it STILL stays the 31st of October. People need to grow up and deal with it or just dont participate. People really dont know the true origin of halloween even if they think they do. Its not a day for worshipping the devil, it has nothing to do with the devil and its only unholy to those who arent of a certain faith (whatever faith it may be) Grow up people

Actually, All Hallows Eve pre-dates Christianity, and is a celebration of the end of the growing season, and a time to think about loved ones who have passed on. It has NOTHING to do with the devil, except by the religous right that want to take fun and enjoyment away from others.

People are so uneducated about so much, maybe they should check things out before they write such foolishness. Do you know any "real holidays"? We have created them because of our beliefs, so what might be a "real holiday" to you won't be to someone else. Besides, if you don't believe in something, just don't do it!!! No one forces you to celebrate.

Yes Halloween is a holiday that dates back even before Sol Invictus, aka Christmas. It evolved out of the tradition of the festival of Samhain which was a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Halloween has become what we see today just like all our other holiday's, but like Will said it's a great reason to have a party and that's good enough for me.

Actually, for all you morons out there who spent too much time playing video games and not enought time studying, IT IS a real holiday. It is All Hallows Eve, the night before All Saint's Day.

It does NOT celebrate the devil you ninny, the purpose of these feast is to remember those who have died. It is a celebration which reminds us that Christianity is not bound by space or time.

Try googling it you dorks, and stop contributing to ignorant hype.

Elizabeth- from the Encyclopædia Britannica: holiday, (from “holy day”), originally a day of either religious or secular commemoration. Many holidays of the major world religions tend to occur at the approximate dates of more ancient, pagan festivals.

therefore by definition halloween is a holiday, and generally it was to celebrate the spirits of those who had passed, not the devil. before you post perhaps you should do some research

Sorry, but Sunday is NOT the Christian Sabbath. The ten commandents say "Remember the 7th day to keep it holy". The last time I looked, Sunday falls on the 1st day of the week. Besides that...If you are worried about trick or treating on Gods' holy day...why celebrate Halloween at all? After all it stems from the pagan "Day of the Dead". I personally don't think God is concerned about small children receiving candy, even on the 7th day.

Halloween does not celebrate the devil. Read your history, even early Roman Catholics celebrated a form of Halloween in the form of the eve of All Saint's Day or Hallowmas in an attempt to blend earlier traditions from merged religious beliefs. Most of the reasons people bash Halloween is based on heresay rather than actual knowledge on the subject.

It is an old Celtic celebration celebrating "All harvest day", nothing to do with the devil.

Go away you Bible thumpin freak. Its a holiday celebrating the harvest and storage of food for the winter that is rooted from the PAGAN/Celtic Holiday Samhain. Don't make yourself look like an idiot, research and get it right. I guess it is true that Atheists and Agnostics know more about the religions of the world then the actual followers of said religions. Its because we choose to educate ourselves before making fools of ourselves. The act of dressing up was to ward OFF evil spirits. To scare them away and create safety. When Christian's came around, they built on all the sites that were for the Celtics observance and made it their own. Basically stole it and everntually the two days were merged. Dia De Los Muertes is the Day of the Dead in Mexico and Latin America. They DO in fact celebrate inviting the spirits of the deceased into their homes.

Halloween...All Hallow's Eve...Hallow=Holy as in "Our Father who art in heaven, "hallowed" be thy name..."

All Saint's Day (Saints being the hallowed, or holy, ones) is on Nov 1. All Hallow's Eve, like Christmas Eve, is the evening before. I'm sure there's a mishmash of different celebrations from different backgrounds rolled up into the choice of the day.

For Protestants like myself, Oct 31 is also considered Reformation Day, because Martin Luther chose the eve of All Saints Day to post his 95 theses on the castle door of the Wittenburg church, sparking the Protestant Reformation.

My children are being taught that Sunday is a different day than the rest of the week and as such they are not going to be trick or treating on the 31st. A local mall had trick or treating last night however, so they were able to participate in that. I don't necessarily think Halloween night needs to be officially moved, but as Christians we will not participate in things that take place on a Sunday - the day set aside for worship of our Lord.

How would you feel if someone wanted to celebrate a Christian holiday on a diff day? Maybe we can make Christmas on the 3rd Monday in Dec every year so it is more conveinient for some. This is a BS reason. Halloween isnt just for candy and dress up it is a real holiday for some people.

It technically can't be moved unless you can move All Saint's Day too...... get over it (I bet you'll be out their with your kids too Sunday or not) those who profess the loudest are usually the worst Christian blow hearts anyway.

Sunday's just a day of the week and if your fake all week, it doesn't matter how much you praise god on Sunday. Do you ever mow on Sunday, rake leaves on Sunday, wash clothes or go shopping on Sunday. Leave the kids alone and stop trying to be so righteous!

I agree church activities are on Sunday (and Wed in some cases), but to ban it all together because it is on Sunday is silly. Alot of churches have harvest parties for Halloween anyway...why not on Sunday. If people choose to not participate in Halloween it should make no difference to them what day it falls on. Having a theological debate over something like this is a waste of time...Keep the main thing the main thing! :)

You'll find that Halloween roots can actually be traced back to christian beliefs. They actually wore the costumes to ward off (or blend in for safety from) evil spirits. It was never a celebration of evil or the damned.

My only point is that I do believe that it would be good to have Halloween on a set day and that day either be a Friday or Saturday, only because the scheduled activities are historically around dusk or later. You can choose to allow your children to dress up as a cowboy, an indian, jesus himself or a bloody corpse... not up to me & I could care less, that's probably where your Christian beliefs come into play. But it sure would be nice if after all the excitement they didn't have to get up early for school!

If the problem is with it falling on the Christian Sabbath, you need to decide your priority - your religion or trick-or-treating? If there's a football game that inferferes, or other scheduling conflict, how is that different from any other conflict in a Mom's schedule? I don't get why some parents apparently think this is a big deal. It definitly doesn't warrant "rescheduling" trick-or-treating, and I certainly wouldn't indulge early or late trick-or-treaters coming on a different day.

It's these stupid religious people giving the heave-ho on it since it falls on a Sunday. First off, it's not a devilish holiday, it's celebrating the dead in some cultures, but good ol' america being soo religious thinks that they are going to hell in a handbag just because it falls on a sunday.
They also confuse everyone by deciding to do it on a Friday and/or Saturday. Halloween is nothing like it used to be. You can't even trick or treat anymore, it's called trunk or treat which sounds like no fun and a borish way to celebrate it.

Plenty of non-christian and/or agnostics celebrate Christmas. I have raised three kids to adults with two little ones still at home and none are leaning toward satanic ritual for trick-or-treating...I think if you lean so hard to legalism with the whole "devilish holiday" us as Christians lose sight of what's important and that's winning souls, not worrying about something as trivial as Halloween :)

Im 34 years old and when we were kids we trick or treated on whatever day it fell on. School night or not.. We just didn't stay out as late. Because its on a Sunday??? Who cares? If people don't want trick or treaters to come to their houses, leave the porch light off. Im so sick of everything being changed and everyone gets offended. Get over it!!!!

                                                                                                                      #15.4 - Fri Oct 29, 2010 3:59 PM EDT

Now, six years later, every parent who commented on this story seems to be having a problem with Halloween falling on a Sunday it conflicts with other things that occur every Sunday, let it be the Lord's Sabbath or a big football game between the Dolphins and the Ravens--thank God I'm that big a football fan--and they wish not to let their kids go trick-or-treating because of the reasons mentioned. Now I know why Green Day called the time we live in the Age of Paranoia. By the way, what's trunk-or-treat?

Sunday is early for bed for kids to be up for school. I really do not want someone ringing the door bell after 8:30 pm. but there is no way the kids will go to bed early that night....Also I would not want to offend someone elses religious beliefs by knocking on their door on a Sunday.

Are you just going to keep trying to celebrate it on Friday or Saturday? You're ridiculous! If you're worried about people coming to your door after a certain time, it's as simple as taping a paper to your door that says 'No more candy'. It's as simple as that! Quit being so ignorant.

This is why we no longer celebrate traditional "AMERICAN" holidays in schools and in town squares or on their day of celebration. October 31st is on Halloween...got a problem with that or want to celebrate it in November or not at all??? no problem move to another dam country and leave mine the way it was when you came here. We don't care if it offends you and don't let the door hit you in the kiester on the way out.

It's these Christian jerks trying to force their beliefs down everyone's throat that is ruining the fun of Halloween. I am so sick of Christian's. I remember in the 80's when I was in Elementary school, we would dress up as ghosts or the devil, vampires and mummies. Now my children are not even allowed to dress up at all!!!! They made it stupid Career Day today to force all the kids into wearing something non scary. PUHLEASE people. Christian's are forcing their way into EVERYTHING and ruining a perfectly fun and acceptable event, Halloween. Lighten up folks. I am dressing up, my kids are and we will be out there going to each and every house with a light on. Oh and besides, it is customary to have your porch light on and other lights, to make it obvious your supplying candy to trick or treaters. Julia, why would you think you would be offending someone who is advertising that they are giving out candy? Have you ever BEEN trick or treating? The only traditional "American" holidays would be those celebrated by the Native American population that were slaughtered by the English immigrants who took over like Caine Toads in Australia, I suppose.

I don't think it needs to be moved. If people choose to celebrate Halloween on a different night then that is there choice but we shouldn't all be forced to do so. Why should we change a holiday that has been in place for ages just to satisfy those who think they need a cause to feel important?

Our town will be celebrating on Saturday instead. For all you religious people would you still celebrate Christmas if it landed on a Sunday?

I do not want to change the day christmas from Dec. 25th why do you feel the need to change All Hallows Eve from Oct, 31st?

Holy crap, let's move it back to August then! Not much goin' on that month. Now, quit being ridiculous and let Halloween be celebrated on Oct. 31st, as always. If other things are going on when it's trick or treat time, then just make a tough choice. And be glad you don't have more difficult decisions to make.
